Thrown into a Labyrinth for reasons unknown, you must roam through the darkness to find your escape. Do you have what it takes to get out alive? Or will you be another feast for the walls that seem to live?

—Game's tagline

Vanish (title stylized in uppercase) is a first-person survival horror video game played by Markiplier. The game garnered notoriety among Mark's fanbase due to its challenging gameplay, taking Mark several tries over the course of a year before he finally managed to beat it.

Game information[]

As an unnamed character, the player is thrown against their will into an underground labyrinthine sewer for reasons unknown. It is up to the player to navigate their way through and find an exit, all the while avoiding the various hazards that are strewn about. The game runs on a dynamic generation system that operates on run-time - each time the game is started, the map layout is randomly generated, and will continue to change as the player progresses.

During the course of the game, the player may find mysterious notes pinned to the walls, written by other unseen characters by the names of Phil and Hank. Collection of these notes is optional, but recommended, as they give away major details on the objective and the situation at hand. Along with these notes, several markings can be found scrawled on the walls, drawn in yellow chalk or scratched into the bricks directly.

The main enemies of Vanish appear to be strange, bird-faced "mole men." The mole men appear as pinkish, deformed humanoid shapes with beak-like growths on the general facial area and signs of heavy decomposition. They may be found huddled against walls, sitting in the center of the hallway, or sitting in a separate hallway behind a locked grate, in which they will either run away or try to reach for the player through the grate once the player enters a certain range. The mole men may also spawn behind the player when they hit a dead end later in the game, in which case the player is to crouch and hug the far corner until the creature leaves - one must still be cautious when leaving the corner, as it will only despawn after a certain range.

Once the player has collected the keys and the glowsticks from the water pump and generator rooms, the generators and pumps will explode and cause all of the lights in the tunnels to black out, leaving them in complete darkness with only the light of the glowsticks at hand. The glowsticks, while not emitting a large range of light, are also numbered, so one must use them only when absolutely necessary. As the remainder of the game from this point on requires for the player to navigate an almost pitch-black labyrinth, keeping the glowsticks in stock can prove to be difficult. To complete the game, the player must find and use the keys to unlock the final gate, which leads to the exit outside the sewers.

Trivia[]

  • As noted in the second part of his Beasts of Prey playthrough, Mark had at least ten hours of Vanish logged in, owing in part to his recorded footage, as well as the times he had played the game off-screen.
  • The ordeal Mark had to go through to beat the game is similar in nature to the fifth episode of his Five Nights at Freddy's playthrough, in which he beat 20/20/20/20 mode on the Custom 7th Night, after a supposed seven hours of straight gameplay.
