Phobia: The Fear of the Darkness is a first person survival horror video game played by Markiplier. The Fear of the Darkness was released in March 2010 and Phobia 1.5 on January 18, 2014. A third installment is currently in development titled Phobia: Fear of the Unknown.
Game Information[]
The Fear of the Darkness[]
David Norton was on his way to his new job outside the town, when a sudden snow storm caused him to crash his car in a middle of nowhere. This forces him to take shelter in a cursed mansion, where his only hope of getting out alive is to break the curse of the house while avoiding zombie-like monsters.
Phobia 1.5[]
Phobia 1.5 serves as a remake of an old test build for Phobia: Fear of the Unknown. The game initially starts out the same, with the main character getting stranded in a snow storm and eventually finding shelter within the confines of an old abandoned mansion. While scavenging the building for fuel, the player discovers that something terrible happened in the mansion decades ago, and that the place might not be as abandoned as they thought.
Gameplay[]
The Fear of the Darkness[]
The game contains a number of puzzles with minor clues left on notes scattered around the mansion that the player will have to use in order to advance through the level. Ominous noise will sound off every time the player makes progress, as well update their objectives. Interaction with objects is possible and is required for accessing locations that are initially out of reach. Combat is not possible, leaving the player to chose whether to run or trap an incoming enemy in another room, as the zombie A.I. cannot operate doors. Despite not having a HUD, a bottle of pain killers will respawn in the bathroom which can be used to restore health previously lost from zombie attacks. The game doesn't feature an autosave mechanic and will require to manually record progress. Otherwise, progress loss will occur upon the player's death or a sudden game crash.

Trivia[]
- Phobia is Latin for "fear".
- The developer drew inspiration from games such as Penumbra and Scratches.
- The original game was met with positive results for its creepy atmosphere, but was criticized for poor design and borrowing soundtracks from Frictional Games' Penumbra series.
