Dead Space is a 2008 third-person science fiction survival horror video game played by Markiplier. It is a critically acclaimed title and was one of Mark's early long Let's Plays featured on his channel.

Dead Space would go on to kickstart a game trilogy and franchise, being followed by Dead Space 2 as a direct sequel. A remake of the original game was developed by Motive Studio and was released on January 27, 2023.

A spiritual successor development by some of the original creators of Dead Space titled The Callisto Protocol was released on December 2, 2022.

Game information[]

The player controls Isaac Clarke, a ship systems engineer who must fight his way through a mining starship infested with an alien scourge. The crew has been slaughtered, and their corpses reanimated into creatures known as Necromorphs. Some common Necromorph types include Slasher, Lurker, Brute, Pregnant, Bomber. The game is played from an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective.

Plot[]

Isaac and his small crew travel to the mining ship USG Ishimura after receiving a distress signal from Isaac's girlfriend, Nicole. After a docking malfunction, Isaac, Kendra Daniels, and Zach Hammond survive the crash. They quickly discover the ship has been overrun by Necromorphs and is in a state of chaos. As Isaac ventures deeper, he uncovers the truth behind the infestation, which involves a religious cult called Unitology, a mysterious alien artifact known as the Marker, and his own increasingly disturbing hallucinations of Nicole.

Trivia[]

During its development by EA Redwood Shores (later Visceral Games), the game was famously pitched as "Resident Evil in space," and its tank controls and over-the-shoulder perspective reflect this influence.

A key element of its terrifying atmosphere is its award-winning sound design by Jason Graves. The score was intentionally discordant and creepy, and the game uses dynamic audio queues to signal enemies appearing from vents, keeping players constantly on edge.

While initially a slow seller, Dead Space became a commercial success, selling over one million units. It is often retrospectively regarded as one of the greatest survival horror games ever made.

Remake[]

Dead Space was fully remade by Motive Studio and released in January 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The remake significantly upgrades the game's visuals, audio, and gameplay while staying faithful to the original's core vision.
