SCP - Containment Breach

Anna is a game played by Markiplier.

Game Information[]

Anna is a psychological horror adventure game developed by Dreampainters Software and published by Kalypso Media. Set in an abandoned sawmill in the mountains of Italy, the game centers on an unnamed protagonist who, after experiencing vivid dreams, finds himself drawn to the remote location. The core gameplay involves solving puzzles and discovering clues to uncover the main character's past and his mysterious connection to a woman named Anna. The game uses an "intuition" system, where players collect and combine pieces of information to gain deeper insights into the backstory.

Plot Summary[]

The protagonist, an archaeology professor haunted by dreams of a sawmill, is driven to visit the location to investigate his past. There, he discovers the tragic history of the area, which is tied to an ancient pagan fertility cult and a beautiful woman named Anna. Through found documents and shifting environments, the player pieces together the horrific events that took place there, including a story of a sabot maker who went mad with love for Anna, and the player character's own disturbing past as a man who killed his family in a fit of rage. The game's narrative is ambiguous, blurring the line between reality and the protagonist's descent into madness.

Gameplay[]

As a first-person adventure game, Anna focuses on exploration and puzzle-solving rather than combat. The game's atmosphere is primarily psychological, using sound design, shifting visuals, and the protagonist's fragile sanity to create a terrifying experience. A key feature is how the environment changes in response to the player's actions, leading to different secrets and possible endings. The game has eight possible endings, ranging from escaping with a fragile grip on reality to being trapped forever with the spirit of Anna. A significant gameplay element in the Extended Edition is "The Wife Doll," a character with its own AI that heightens the psychological tension.

Trivia[]

The game's story is based on legends from the Val D'Ayas region of Italy, where local folklore tells of a lumberjack who killed his family in a sawmill.

The Extended Edition, released on April 13, 2013, addressed player feedback from the original release by adding new environments, puzzles, gameplay features, music, and an improved interface. This version also included the AI-driven "Wife Doll" character.

A post-credits scene is unlocked for players who find all the "Intuitions," revealing a hidden fresco of Anna next to the Zoroastrian spirit of destruction, Angra Mainyu, suggesting a deeper, more sinister backstory.
