A Heist with Markiplier is Markiplier's first YouTube Premium interactive film. It aired on October 30, 2019, and premiered for free on his YouTube channel. It follows a fictional story of Markiplier breaking into a museum to steal an ancient box of unknown contents. The viewer sees through the perspective of his unnamed assistant. Like the video A Date With Markiplier, this video uses YouTube's suggested video feature to simulate a "choose your own adventure" story, where the viewer can guide the path of the story by selecting the suggested video corresponding to the character's choice.
There are a total of 31 possible endings across these videos, where the circumstances and nature of the story radically changes between one ending or another. The contents of the box, as well as the identities of certain characters also changes between one ending and another, in a similar style to the Henry Stickmin games.[1] Proper set of credits and end card is only seen on Ending 6, simply called "The End". The show also features a musical number sung by Markiplier and composed by the Gregory Brothers, I Don't Wanna Be Free. Along with well-known personas of Markiplier such as Darkiplier and Wilford Warfstache, the show also includes a variety of other Markiplier personas, including "Yancy", "Captain Magnum", and "Illinois". The cast also includes other YouTubers such as Bob, Wade, Rosanna Pansino, and MatPat.
In late 2020, following the conclusion of Unus Annus, Mark announced a sequel titled In Space with Markiplier—referred to as A Heist with Markiplier 2 at the time—to be in the works.[2] The first part of the film was released on April 4, 2022,[3] and the second on May 2, 2022.[4]
Plot[]
Markiplier and his unnamed Assistant—who serves as a gender neutral audience surrogate character and is only shown from a point-of-view shot—break into a museum in order to steal an ancient box from the building's vault. After knocking out a guard and avoiding the rest of the museum's security via various shenanigans, Mark and his Assistant locate the vault, but require a key each from two nearby guards to get pass a two-person lock. Mark acquires one from a guard off-screen while the Assistant feeds a steak to Chica the guard dog and, while distracted, swipes the key off her dog vest. As the two enter the vault, Mark carelessly takes the artifact off the pedestal, which ends up triggering the security alarm. Mark then asks his Assistant whether they should attempt to sneak out of the building by going down a sewer, or escape the building by engaging the encroaching security head-on with firearms.
If they attempt to sneak out of the building, they hide from guards, who are searching for the two, and stumble across a part of the sewer that splits off two different paths: a dark tunnel with screaming sounds, and a light one. Mark asks his Assistant which one to take to continue.
If they take the dark one, Mark suggests splitting up.
If they attempt to escape the building, they are presented with a helicopter and a car, to which Mark asks his Assistant whether they should use the helicopter or the car to avoid the incoming police.
